Do sự khác biệt về mặt chức năng, bút stylus khác một trời một vực với bút vẽ kỹ thuật số (digital pen). Tuy cả hai đều được sử dụng để nhập thông tin vào thiết bị hiển thị, nhưng vai trò của chúng trong việc này lại khác nhau.
Bút stylus
Bút stylus chủ yếu để nhập và xử lý thông tin trên thiết bị PDA. Với thiết kế nhỏ gọn, bút stylus cho phép ghi chú, vẽ vời trên thiết bị. Màn hình PDA có kích thước khiêm tốn. Vì vậy, bạn thường phải ghi chú dưới dạng tốc ký và biểu đồ.
Bút vẽ kỹ thuật số
Bút vẽ kỹ thuật số được sử dụng kết hợp với máy tính. Chúng cho phép thực hiện nhiều chức năng hơn bút stylus. Các nhà thiết kế đồ họa thường sử dụng chúng để sáng tác nghệ thuật trên máy tính bảng. HSSV thì dùng chúng để ghi chép trong lớp. Thiết bị truyền chuyển động đến máy tính, nơi diễn họa nó thành hình ảnh, chữ viết, văn bản.
Những khác biệt khác
Bút stylus thường nhỏ gọn hơn nhiều so với bút vẽ kỹ thuật số. Nguyên nhân là vì nó không chứa linh kiện điện tử bên trong. Nhiều bút vẽ kỹ thuật số không đơn thuần chỉ để vẽ. Chúng thường tích hợp sẵn tính năng ghi âm. Bút stylus chỉ cần lực nhấn trên màn hình PDA để ghi dữ liệu đầu vào. Trong khi đó, bút vẽ kỹ thuật số cần kết nối với máy tính mới hoạt động được. Nhiều bút vẽ kỹ thuật số yêu cầu loại giấy đặc biệt, còn bút stylus chỉ cần màn hình thiết bị là đủ.
